There is growing evidence for the antidepressant effects of psychedelics, yet the mechanism underlying these effects are still a mystery. Igor Magaraggia and Rudy Schreiber (of PIM) have suggested a hypothetical model of psychedelics therapeutic mechanism.
“After investigating what psychedelics do at the molecular, cellular, and behavioural level, we have suggested a hypothetical model that tries to explain their unique antidepressant effects. By stimulating in the production of new neurons and promoting the growth of already existing ones, psychedelics are able to restore the specific deficits in cognitive functioning that cause depressed patients to focus more on negative cues and thoughts compared to positive ones. Finally, this model may serve as a framework for future studies that aim to investigate the effects of psychedelics in depression.” – Igor Magaraggia
